Kayaking in the San Juan Islands provides an excellent opportunity to witness the captivating phenomenon of bioluminescence up close, as it allows for close proximity to the plankton. Bioluminescence is a magical phenomenon that can be seen in many parts of the world. However, San Juan Islands kayaking offers the best chances of viewing the most vibrant bioluminescence displays worldwide! These areas are home to a variety of bioluminescent creatures, including plankton, jellyfish, and ctenophores. When these creatures are disturbed, they release light, creating a dazzling display. This night kayak tour is the perfect choice for nature enthusiasts seeking to witness one of the most stunning and unique displays of the night.
The San Juan Island Bioluminescence Kayak Tour lasts approximately 3 hours, from pick-up to drop-off. Tours depart daily at dusk from April 1 – November 1.
Our most popular San Juan Islands kayak tour is the our afternoon/day kayak tour. We are the only company in the San Juan Islands that adjusts our kayak launch location each day based on the latest whale and wildlife sightings and weather forecasts. This ensures the safest and most enjoyable experience with wildlife sightings unmatched by any other company in the Salish Sea. With three launch locations to choose from, we offer the flexibility to explore the best spots for wildlife encounters. The east side route, which often includes a lunch break on a scenic island at a national wildlife refuge and state park, is ideal for spotting seals, eagles, sea lions and occasionally Bigg’s killer whales (mammal-eating orcas). Both the east and south side routes also offer more chances to see a variety of marine birds. The south side is also a prime location for stellar sea lion sightings and occasionally baleen whales (such as humpbacks or minkes). The west side is renowned for its history of southern resident killer whales (salmon-eating orcas) which are more rarely seen in our current era.
As a general trend, food scarcity, pollution and boat traffic have all resulted in fewer westside salmon-eating orca sightings, with a gradual decline over the past 30 years. Meanwhile mammal-eating orca and stellar sea lions populations are rising primarily due to environmental regulations of bottom fisheries in the Salish Sea. Overall kayaking in San Juan Islands is one of the most accessible manners for whale and wildlife watching in the country.
