Bioluminescence is closely tied to the lunar cycle. A bright full moon tends to dim the glow of bioluminescent organisms, while a dark new moon allows their brilliance to shine in full display. The “in-between” phases of the moon offer moderate levels of illumination. To maximize your chances of experiencing a stunning bioluminescent display on your Sea Quest kayak trip, check the lunar calendar on this page and select a date when the moon is darker. If you’re hoping to catch a partial moon, the third quarter phase is ideal. During this phase, the moon wanes and rises later in the night. In contrast, the first quarter moon rises well before sunset, making it less visible.
How to Read a Lunar Calendar for the Best Bioluminescent Kayaking Experience
San Juan Sea Kayaking
When planning a kayaking adventure to experience the stunning beauty of bioluminescence, timing is everything. The lunar cycle, which governs the phases of the moon, has a profound effect on the brightness and visibility of bioluminescent organisms in the water. Understanding how to read a lunar calendar can help you maximize your chances of witnessing a breathtaking display of glowing waters on your kayaking trip. Here’s everything you need to know about the relationship between the lunar cycle and bioluminescence, along with tips on how to use the lunar calendar to plan your adventure with Sea Quest.
Why Reading a Lunar Calendar is Crucial for the Best Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour
Bioluminescence is the natural phenomenon where organisms emit light. In certain coastal areas, bioluminescent plankton and other microorganisms create glowing waters when disturbed. While this display is mesmerizing at any time, its intensity can vary greatly depending on the phase of the moon.
The moon plays a crucial role in determining the visibility of bioluminescence because of its light. A bright, full moon can overwhelm the delicate glow of bioluminescent organisms, making them appear dimmer and less spectacular. Conversely, a new moon, when the moon is darkest, offers the best conditions for witnessing the full brilliance of bioluminescence, as there is minimal natural light pollution. During this time, the glow of the organisms can shine more brightly and clearly.
How to Read a Lunar Calendar for Your Best Bioluminescence Kayak Tour
To plan the best kayaking tour, you must understand how to read a lunar calendar and how it affects the visibility of bioluminescence. The lunar cycle has four distinct phases that determine the amount of moonlight, which in turn impacts the intensity of bioluminescent displays. Here’s a breakdown of the key phases:
New Moon: The Best Time for Bioluminescent Kayaking Tours
A new moon is when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, so the side of the moon facing Earth is not illuminated by sunlight. The sky is at its darkest during this phase, providing optimal conditions for viewing bioluminescence. The glow from bioluminescent organisms will appear most vivid and striking with minimal natural light to overpower their glow. To experience the best bioluminescent kayaking, plan your trip around the new moon for maximum intensity.
First Quarter Moon: Not Ideal for Bioluminescence Kayak Tours
The first quarter moon occurs about a week after the new moon. During this phase, half of the moon’s visible surface is illuminated. The first quarter moon rises in the afternoon and is visible during the early evening, which can provide enough light to overshadow the glow of bioluminescent organisms. As a result, this phase is not ideal for kayaking in bioluminescence, as the bright moonlight reduces visibility of the natural light display.
Full Moon: Least Ideal for Kayak Tours in Bioluminescence
The full moon happens approximately two weeks after the new moon. During this phase, the moon is fully illuminated, and its brightness can overwhelm the glow of bioluminescent organisms in the water. This intense light can wash out the natural bioluminescence, making it less visible. For the best bioluminescent kayaking experience, it’s advisable to avoid planning your trip during a full moon.
Third Quarter Moon: Second Best for Bioluminescent Kayak Tours
The third quarter moon occurs about a week after the full moon, marking the halfway point between the full and new moon. Like the first quarter moon, half of the moon is illuminated, but the moon rises later in the night. This phase allows for more darkness earlier in the evening, providing a balance of moonlight and dark skies. The third quarter moon is a good choice if you prefer a moderate amount of moonlight while still being able to enjoy a bioluminescence display, though it may not be as vibrant as during a new moon.
Using a Lunar Calendar to Maximize Your Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour
To ensure the best kayaking experience under the glow of bioluminescence, timing is everything. Here’s how to use a lunar calendar to plan your trip for optimal bioluminescence:
Check the Lunar Calendar for Darker Phases: Consult the lunar calendar to find dates close to the new moon or the third quarter moon. These phases provide the best conditions for viewing bioluminescence, as the moonlight won’t overshadow the glow of the organisms.
Avoid the Full Moon for Better Visibility: The full moon creates too much light pollution, making it difficult to see the bioluminescence clearly. Skip the full moon phase for a more vibrant and captivating experience.
Plan Your Kayaking Timing Around Sunset: Ideally, plan your kayaking trip after sunset to allow the sky to darken naturally as the moon rises. If you’re kayaking during the third quarter moon, keep in mind that the moon will rise later, allowing for more dark hours to enjoy bioluminescence. Please note that all Sea Quest Kayak Tours have a planned start time with these factors in mind.
Consider Weather Conditions: In addition to checking the lunar phase, ensure good weather conditions. Clear skies with minimal light pollution will further enhance the visibility of the bioluminescent display, ensuring you have the best kayaking experience possible. The best weather is between June and August

Amazing way to see the San Juans Kayaking in the San Juan islands has been on my bucket list for ages, and this trip completely completely fulfilled my desire! My friend and I took a long weekend (from Utah) up to the San Juans, and did a 2 day/1 night all-women's trip. The guide was very knowledgeable, and probably the best part was having someone cook us a hot dinner and hot breakfast (and coffee) at camp! So luxurious! We camped on Jones island and snagged a beautiful spot that had 360 views. Paddling was about 6-7 miles each day. Leisurely pace, but definitely be prepared to be sore if you don't kayak often. I stand up paddle board a lot, but this was a bit different! 11/10 amazing experience.

Great Paddle with a Great Guide (Heather) We went during the shoulder season, so it was kind of cold, without a lot of wildlife (no whales). But the guide (Heather) was excellent, the scenery was beautiful. We stopped on Turn Island and had an amazing hike, I strongly recommend taking the path around the island, it's lovely.

Tick this off your bucket list We were lucky enough to enjoy a bucket list trip to San Juan Island to go on the Bioluminescence night kayaking trip with Sea Quest. The experience was excellent from start to finish, we all felt safe even though we were not all experienced at kayaking. The bioluminescence was simply breathtaking and our guide Jeff was very helpful, knowledgeable and good company. We would definitely recommend.

They were patient and encouraging. The bioluminescence in the water was indescribably beautiful and magical. Every paddle action created a scene of sparkling diamonds in the water! The occasional jellyfish outlined in “lights” was a delight. Don’t miss this experience!

Our Three-day kayaking/camping trip thru the San Juans with the "Whale Whisperer!" My friend and I went on the three-day/two-night kayak trip through some of the San Juan Islands this past July 9-11, 2014. We had great weather and an excellent guide Caleb, and his able assistant Paige. Caleb, at the ripe old age of 23 is mature, experienced and so knowledgeable beyond his age.
He is living his passion and it was an inspiration to listen, learn and experience all that he has to offer. His knowledge of kayaking, camping, and his love of the San Juan Islands was so apparent to us. His level of species identification in both flora and fauna is impeccable. His appreciation and depth of knowledge on the ocean environment and sustainability was endless. We felt safe with his directions in the water and had a great time camping. He and Paige were great hosts.
One tip would be to not pack too much at this time of the year. One water resistant top for the campground will do. Booties are advisable. Rocks under your feet and toes getting in and out are not very comfortable and limits your ability to move your boat, etc. Sunscreen for sure and lightweight wool socks are GREAT! Sandals for the campground are fine. Binoculars are definitely a plus, unless you have 20/15 eyesight like Caleb. Ha!
He is also something of a "Whale Whisperer" as we called him. His pinpoint sense of where whales, dolphins and other sea life may be was always right on. On our second day we were lucky enough to see a transient pod/family trolling the waters in the late morning. In the evening, we camped on Turn Island and I truly believe it was because Caleb had an idea that the same pod might be headed in that direction.
After dinner, the same pod was seen coming toward the island and a strait where they were hunting seals. To ultimately see nature in a purest sense taking place from the island and anywhere from 100- 1000 feet away was amazing. The breaching, dorsal fins, herding mannerisms of the whales was riveting. It can't happen like that on every trip, but being with Caleb you knew it wasn't because he wasn't trying.
Even if we hadn't been so lucky to see the whales, the kayaking was blissful and it was just astounding that Caleb had an answer for virtually every question we had. Toward the end, we joked while paddling through a few afternoon choppy seas "We must be able to come up with a question!" "What doesn't he know?" And then, we just laughed.
It was a perfect trip! I would recommend the three-day kayaking trip to anyone with reasonable kayaking skills. And being that we were in tandems, that makes the trip that much more enjoyable. Teamwork Rules!!! Thanks to Sea Quest for answering pre-trip questions and special thanks to the incredible Caleb and Paige.

Delightful 3 day trip with Seaquest kayaks. Guides Caleb and Jeffery know the island, the tides, and the campsite. 3 day trip. Guides read the waves and the group. Accomplished a nice 16 mile paddle on day one that felt like an 8 mile trip! Using wind and tide knowledge kept us paddling with weather. By same reasoning, second day up early to get ahead of problematic winds and still have a good 8 hour paddle. We saw hump back whales, porpoises, mackerel, eagles, yellow finch, deer, kelp and more. The food was good, hot and tasty. Out kayaks were in great shape. The tents and other gear was well maintained. The support staff was on Tim for shuttles and assistance. Very lovely trip. It is my 4 th trip with sea quest. Likely do 5 day trip next summer.
